Senior Backend Engineer (Java & Kotlin
We offer hybrid working, with occasional presence at one of our Holland & Barrett offices in
London or Nuneaton for team collaboration, key meetings and events (typically once per
quarter).
Intro
We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help shape the future of our supply chain
technology at Holland & Barrett.
You’ll join us at a pivotal moment as we continue to evolve our platforms to better serve our
customers and colleagues. From warehouse systems to stock optimisation and fulfilment,
your work will play a key role in making wellness products accessible to more people, more
efficiently.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex, real-world problems, influencing
technical direction, and building systems that operate at scale.
What you’ll be doing
Lead the design and delivery of scalable backend systems across our supply chain
domain
Build reliable, high-quality services that support logistics, stock management and
fulfilment
Collaborate with product, operations, and engineering teams to deliver impactful
solutions
Mentor engineers and support their technical and professional development
Take ownership of technical decisions, balancing immediate delivery with long-term
sustainability
Translate complex technical concepts into clear, accessible language for stakeholders
Champion best practices in system reliability, performance and security
Continuously improve ways of working, exploring new tools, technologies and
approaches
What you’ll bring
Strong experience in software development using Java, Kotlin or similar languages
Experience working with modern frameworks such as Spring Boot, Spring WebFlux or
Project Reactor
Practical experience with event streaming technologies such as Apache Kafka
Experience working with both relational and NoSQL databases (e.g. PostgreSQL,
DynamoDB)
Experience building and running services on AWS or other public cloud platforms
Strong experience with modern development toolchains (e.g. Git, Maven, Docker, CI/CD
pipelines)
A solid understanding of designing and building distributed systems and APIs
Experience with testing practices and tools, including approaches such as TDD
Experience shaping technical approaches and influencing architecture decisions across
teams
A collaborative mindset, with the ability to communicate clearly across teams
